Safety With A Hydrogen Portable Generator
Working with a hydrogen portable generator can be dangerous due to the explosiveness of the air and hydrogen mixture. You already have two of the three requirements for fire. All that is missing is an ignitor source and you will have an explosion.
Operators must pay strict attention to safety when working in a room with a hydrogen portable generator. The room should be well ventilated with forced air systems where the motors are outside the room, and it is preferrable that the room be outdoors. All safety practices should be designed to reduce the risk of fire and explosion. There is no second chance with mistakes, the first may be fatal and it could affect many other people around you.
Excessive heat and dangerous chemical reactions may be produced by the hydrogen portable generator if used incorrectly. The hydrogen portable generator should never be removed from its water tank when operating because it will overheat and start a fire. Always stop the generator before removing it from the tank. Let it cool down and then you can maintain it by following exact maintenance manual procedures..
The hydrogen portable generator should be completely grounded to prevent any static electrical charges. Improper grounding will allow static charge buildup which can be very hazzardous. Copper wires planted three to four feet into the ground should accomplish this if the resistance between them is less than 1000 ohms. You can increase the number of wires placed in the ground until the resistence is less than 1000 ohms. Make sure that all grounding connectors are tight and will not come loose.
All of the grounding stakes of the hydrogen portable generator should be connected to the water tank and all other metal parts should be interconnected through grounding wires so that when they are cleaned, the bare metal is exposed for alligator clip connectors.
Operators of the hydrogen portable generator wearing either wool or fur must also be properly grounded due to the potential of static electricity. A wristband connected to the copper ground wires will accomplish this. Carpet should not be installed in the room and all other ignition souces should be removed.
Taking all of the above precautions will drastically reduce any chance for serious accidents, but a regular safety and maintenance routine should be followed to catch any problems before they become explosive.
