With dedicated power lines to the UMM campus, the energy does not have to travel far to get the job done. If the need for more power occurs, the local utility lines provide it automatically, without a moment's notice. This also proves to be good on the whole community, due to the fact that when energy is in less demand, the excess is shifted back into the grid for other's consumption.
The university's efforts helps put the U.S. only second to Germany in wind energy production. Even with all that has been accomplished, the university has more plans for increasing its energy independence. There are plans on the way for a biomass gasification plant at the school, scheduled for this year, which should supply 80 percent of the heating and cooling needs for the campus. Now, imagine how much that will benefit the school's budget. The bio waste can now be used to return energy to the school. With technology advancing in the portable generator arena, pretty soon this school may be completely run by generator power in the near future.
