Generators are used to create electric power when none other is available. Generators come in a wide range of sizes from small home units of 1000 watts to industrial units of 100,000 watts. Price and size of the units will correspond to the wattage requirement. They are classified as either standy or portable generators. The difference between the terms is whether the generator is setup to be used automatically during a failure of the primary electric supply or is meant to be moved around to be used where no primary electric supply exists. Either way allows for the continued use of necessary appliances or equipment during an outage. Backup generators may be either type, but are permanently installed at a location and wired into the existing building wiring to make switching over as easy as flipping a switch. Some units have the option to sense the outage and electronically switch to generator when power is off and back when it returns.A potential user must determine what requirement they have in a generator before purchasing. The choices to consider are how much power is required (watts), what voltages are needed (120, 240, etc.), what kind of budget they have, what is allowable in noise and safety concerns (fuel type), and how long the unit may need to run (fuel type).
The most common fuel for home generators is gasoline because it is readily available and inexpensive. Larger units may run on diesel, natural gas or propane, depending on what utilities and storage capacities are available. Dependability can also affect the fuel choice (diesel lasts longer) as can weather conditions (diesel is hard to start in the cold). All generators must be located outside so that no carbon monoxide can accumulate in the home or business.
Propane units are generally used in locations that are already propane equipped, such as farms and rural areas. Diesel fuel is the most efficient for the power produced, but the generators are heavier and cost more to purchase. Natural gas is an ideal source if there is a dependable supply because there is no storage required or refueling.
Manufactures guidlines should always be followed in the installation, storage and useage of generators. Scheduled maintenance depending on the fuel type is required, and regular testing should be done on standby units to make sure they are always ready to kick into action. If the unit it to be wired into the home or business wiring, a licensed electrician should do the work and a quality transfer switch (costly) should be used. Major hazzards with generatos consist of fuel spills, overloading circuits and too light of extension cords.
Generators should be sized for the job, buying too large is a waste of fuel. Since most people use less electricity in power outages anyway, you should make a list of the required equipment and lights and only run those even though you have the capability to power more items. Always include pumps, refigeration equipment, lights and communication equipment in the calculations.
